Music: As I mentioned earlier, a lot of the music in the film was composed by Xian Xinghai, who is most famous for having composed, The Yellow River Cantata. The tune, Song at Midnight was something of a huge hit in its time. Other song titles include Hot Blood and Yellow River Love. I am happy to say that a recording of Song at Midnight is available on a fairly new album. Keep in mind that it does not contain the lyrics that are sung in the film. If you want to find out more about that recording, visit: Naxos.com and search under the name, Xian Xinghai. Look for an album with the cover shown below (The orange one). If you register, you can hear part of the song for free! I currently have no idea where to buy this. I very much want the whole album so if anyone finds a site that is selling it, please contact me. Check out some of the other re-recording below!

The Singing: As far as who was sing voice of Song Danping in the film, Jin Shan does not actually do the singing as The Phantom. The man who provided the Phantoms singing voice was Sheng Jialun, and he became a huge star in his own right for singing the title song of the film, "Midnight Song"

This is the original soundtrack to the film Midnight Song, though this is most likely the 1967 re-release, and not the one from 1937. Its hard to know for sure, because there is no date anywhere on the album. Picked this little baby up on e-bay not long ago. I have only ever played it once, and I'm fairly certain that it included different recordings of the songs then what appears in the actual movie. Most fascinating is the fact that a lot of the music on this album, never appeared in the movie at all. I'm not exactly sure why that is.

A recording of "Song of Midnight" is also available on the album pictured below. The title of this album is Classic Chinese Folk Songs, Vol. 7, and it is preformed by Yang Hongii. The exact same recording also appears on another album called The Treasure of Folk Songs, vol.7. The Yang Hongii recording, as it appears on both albums, is readily available from Itunes.

Maybe the most exciting of these newer recordings, appeared on an album called, Greatest Hits from Last Century, Vol. 2. This version, actually includes the original lyrics from the movie, and is sung by Shen Xiang. It's a creepy recording of the song, which I love because that's exactly how the original recording in the film felt. Like the Yang Hongii version, the only place I know where you can get this is Itunes. Check there!

I also recently found another recording of songs from this movie, but the title of the actual album is still unknown to me. You can hear these songs for free however, if you simply type in the name, 'Xian Xinghai' in to this page: http://www.rhapsody.com/album/songsatmidnight?artistId=6578222 These recordings are really something specials, as the lyrics are actually sung! Unfortunately I also don't know who this recording artist is.
