I've been trying to find this one for quite some time now, without any luck. However, from different reviews of the film, I have been able to piece together this much.... Midnightmare is about an opera singer/ revolutionary, (Song DanPing.) who falls madly in love with Li Xiaoxia, who is the daughter of a powerful and ruthless warlord. To end Songs relationship with Li Xiaoxia, the warlord has Song disfigured, (presumably by acid like in the 1937 version.) Because Li Xiaoxia believes Song to be dead, she goes completely insane. Song, mutilated and humiliated hides himself within the theater where he was once a great star.

Years later, after the theater has failed into disuse and disorder over the years, a new acting troupe comes to perform. Sun Xiaogou, the your actor, is well known for having a likeness similar to Song's. I do not know if Song actually trains Sun to sing in this version the way that he does in the 1937 version, or The Phantom Lover, but it is fairly likely. Song very much hopes that Sun will turn out to be a replacement for himself in the heart of Li Xiaoxia, because he wants Li Xiaoxia to be happy, and is to ashamed to show his hideousness to her. However Sun is already in love with another, Liu Die.

For the most part, this sounds like it was a pretty accurate retelling of the 1937 film, though I believe it had a much more political edge to it than the older films. Again because of the language barrier I cant be sure about that.

Both the 1962 and 1963 versions on Ye Bange Ge Sheng stared Le Di, (Pictured above) in the role of Li Xiaoxia. Le Di would go on to become a very famous actress in Hong Kong in the 1960's. Sadly, she killed herself in 1968. This is one of the movies that led her to become a big star.
