I feel truly fortunate to have been able to see any of these, as not so long ago that was nearly an impossibiity. The Ye Benge Ge Sheng films were first invented by director Maxu Weibang in 1937, and were probably inspired from the Lon Chaney silent classic. Many of these movies were major classics in China, though were virtually unknown in America until 1995, when the lavish Phantom Lover remake was made. The basic story is a combination of Phantom of The Opera and Romeo and Juliet. It is especially notable to add that the 1937 version was indeed the very first time that a Phantom was ever disfigured by acid, predating the Claude Rains movie by many years. Another interesting point is that these are perhaps the only Phantom films were The Phantom trains a young man to sing, instead of a woman. As you look at the pictures below, take note of how much the imagery in these films has changed from pure horror, to fairly light romance - an interesting trend that is not so unlike what has happened to The Phantom in both the UK and America.
