WARNING!: As always, this page may be extremely spoiler heavy... If you didn't want to know, then don't blame me that you looked!

Ballets and Takarazuka and Ice shows oh my! I have to admit, there all kinds of movies in this section. As far as the Andrew Lloyd Webber stuff goes, I've tried to just stick to the stuff that includes the actors dressed up as The Phantom characters.

(1980) The Phantom of The Opera

A ballet in two acts and twelve scenes. (100 minuets. December 28, 1980.)

Dir: Dirk Sanders Choreography: Roland Petit. Music: Marcel Landoski. Art Direction: Patrick Flynn. Cast: Peter Schaufuss, Dominique Khalfouni, Patrick Dupont.

A reference to this, was found in the book, Shadowmen: Heroes and Villains of French Pulp Fiction. By Jean-Marc and Randy Lofficier in their list of Phantom films. It was originally broadcast from The Ballet de Marseille, (I believe live.) on French tv channel 2, but during a time when few people had VCR's, making finding copies of this almost impossible. This is most likely never to be seen again unfortunately. This versions is believed to have been restaged in 1987. Roland Petit left the company in 1998, so its not likely that the version will be preformed there again.

Jean-Marc and Randy Lofficier are the team responsible for the 4th and newest translation of the original novel, as well as an extraordinary amount of scholarship regarding French pop culture. Check out their website here!: http://www.coolfrenchcomics.com/

I know this isn't exactly a musical, but well, wasen't sure else where to put it either.

Very special thanks to Jean-Marc Lofficier for his help with this entry!

(1990) The Phantom of The Opera

Dir: Darwin Knight Wri: Bruce Falstein Cast: David Staller, Elisabeth Walsh, Chrisopher Rath. Music and lyrics by: Lawrence Rosen and Paul Schierhorn. Produced by: Karen Poindexter

When I die, I will be going strait to the 9th circle of hell for all the hours I've wasted of my life watching this movie over and over again. I was about 10 the first time I saw this, and I was fascinated with David Stallers portrayal of The Phantom. True, with adult eyes and ears, this production does leave something to be desired. Yet I still find myself enjoying this each time I revisit it.

So let me plead my case as to why I love this. Check out that face! Despite the fact that it only covers half of his face, this is without a doubt one of the best Phantom of The Opera deformities ever. Always reminded me quite a lot of Susan Kay's description of Erik. Also, this Phantom has a real background. He shares the same past as The Leroux Phantom, which is extremely refreshing. He explains to us that he is a Composer, architect, magician, soldier - in other words, he might not look like the Leroux Phantom, but some one certainly did their homework when they wrote the script. We are even treated to the existence of The Persian in this version, which is sadly a pretty rare occurrence... And Staller is a hilarious, hyperactive nut case and I just love him.

This version gets a lot of flack, perhaps deservingly, because it rips off the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. True, Staller does sport a half mask, the trade mark of the ALW version, and there are many other similarities such as Madame Giry playing such a huge role. Other people hate this movie because after things don't work out with Christine, he goes after a ballerina, presumably Meg. I've seen that really drive people nuts, hahaha.

This started out as a Hirshfield Theater fundraiser, and was luckily filmed and released on VHS. A lot of people ended up seeing this tape because for a long time people were picking up thinking that it was the ALW play on video. Years later it also received a DVD release as well.

I've never seen this educational video, but from what I've heard, this follows around Phantom Jr, the son of Erik, as he teaches all about Opera to students. Very little else is known. I'm in the process now of trying to find it, so I'll certainly post up anything I may find.

(1992/1993) Paris By Night 29

Cast: Henry Chuc, Dalena

Thuy Nga Productions. Filmed at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas around 1992/1993

Done as part of a series of Vietnamese music/variety entertainment shows titled ˜Paris By Night' produced by the Thuy Nga Vietnamese entertainment company. Henry Chuc, of Chinese ancestry, and Dalena, an American woman who can sing Vietnamese, performed a medley of songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, The Phantom of the Opera. Both singers were dressed in ALW-inspired costumes, with Henry wearing the half mask, cape, and fedora, as the Phantom, and Dalena in a voluminous white gown with hooded cape as Christine. The entire segment was about 9 minutes long and preceded by a history of musical, in Vietnamese, by the emcee.

The medley opens with part of the title theme, the moves through parts of ˜Music of the Night' and ˜All I Ask of You' (no Raoul, so his part is sung by Henry the Phantom). After this, some performers in police uniforms show up and the title theme is sung again. Henry as the Phantom pulls his cape over his face, drops his mask, and flees the police. Dalena, as Christine, picks up the mask and does the ending high notes of the theme song; which were probably not all her own singing voice.

This marks the first time Phantom was introduced into the mainstream Vietnamese entertainment industry and has left an indelible impression upon many of the younger generation of Vietnamese and Vietnamese-Americans who watched it (it was the ˜gateway drug' to Phantom for author of this article, in fact!). The video recording of this performance is available, but increasingly harder to find, from Thuy Nga entertainment's ˜Paris By Night 29: In Las Vegas' release. The audio recording is available from Thuy Nga's music division, on a compilation CD titled˜When I Fall in Love.'

(2004) Phantom - Takarazuka cast
Cast: Youka Wao, Mari Hanafusa, Sakiho Juri, and the rest of The Cosmos Troupe.

Takarazuka is a time honored style of acting in Japan, where all roles in a play are played by women. This is DVD of a Japanese, Takarazuka performance of the Arthur Kopit/ Murry Yeston version of Phantom! Its an incredible show, with AMAZING sets and acting, though it has it's bizarre moments to, such as oddly placed dance numbers, and even a few songs that aren't in the original show.

I have a lot more information on this movie to put up later on, so check back!

(2006) Phantom - Flower Troupe Takarazuke cast

Cast: Sumire Haruno, Ayane Sakurano

You guys are going to have to help me out with this one, because the way it's looking now, there where actually TWO Takarazuke DVD's released in the world! The first is the most well known one, with is the Cosmos Troupe version... But then there's this one to by The Flower Troupe cast. Problem is, I'm not 100% certain that this was actually released as a dvd, but I have seen as pro shot version of something that did differ from the Cosmos Troup... It was definitely not a fan filmed tape or anything like that.
